Jefferson County in eastern Missouri is part of the St. Louis Metropolitan Area and has a population of about 227,000.
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) enhanced its existing Crisis Intervention Team by creating a second mental health coordinator position for the delivery of mental health crisis services. The two clinicians (LPCs) are embedded with the Sheriff’s Office, while they are not deputies, they do wear uniforms with a badge that differs from a deputy’s uniform and they drive a Sheriff’s Office vehicle. Program Goals
With funding from the grant to support a second clinician, JSCO reports experiencing the following positive impacts from expanded CIT implementation:
- Social workers conduct follow-ups
- Reduced officer time spent on calls for service and fewer calls involving mental health crises
- Increase in 988 calls that stay with 988 and are not passed to 911
- Increase in awareness of CIT through school events, Rotary Club, and word of mouth
