Rapid City South Dakota lies east of the Black Hills National Forest and has a population of about 80,000 residents.

Rapid City has been recognized as one of the safest communities in the country and is continually working to strengthen the relationship between law enforcement and the people served.  The Rapid City Police Department (RCPD) has deployed CIT through the Collaborative Community Co-Response Team. Two Indian American behavioral health specialists are employed as part of a comprehensive crisis intervention model, providing culturally appropriate resources to the Indian American community. Program Goals

The grant funding allows RCPD to:

  • Train 100% of officers in CIT
  • Integrate the community and service providers in CIT and co-response efforts
  • Utilize CIT as a baseline training for de-escalation and service provider integration
