The City of Burien, a suburb of King County, Washington, provides services for approximately 53,000 residents with an authorized police department of 43.8 officers. Burien Police Department (BPD) seeks to implement a youth-focused co-response model: Youth Crisis & Early Diversion Navigation. This model creates capacity for youth trauma-informed response within BPD and forges a strong organizational alliance with area agencies and service providers. Cohort 2022.
Program Goals
The goals of the Youth Crisis & Early Diversion Navigation model include:
- Provide youth with moment-of-crisis care, follow-up, and resources in and following a law enforcement interaction
- Understand the needs of youth, give youth a voice, support de-escalation, navigate and mitigate crisis and trauma, and empower youth to choose a path towards positive change in their lives
