Greenville is situated at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in South Carolina and commonly referred to as the Upstate with a population of 525,534.
The Greenville County Sheriff’s Office (GCSO) plans to develop the Homeless Response Unit (HRU) to address the complex and diverse needs of unhoused community members and to foster thriving communities. HRU aims to connect people experiencing homelessness or housing insecurity with appropriate services, address neighborhood issues and concerns, carry out proactive enforcement when necessary to mitigate ongoing challenges, and formulate proactive strategies. Cohort 2023.
Program Goals
The grant funding allows GCSO to accomplish the following:
- Develop the Homeless Response Unit (HRU)
- Connect individuals with appropriate services
- Address neighborhood issues and concerns
- Carry out proactive enforcement when necessary to mitigate ongoing issues
- Allocate funding to establish a crisis intervention specialist position, who serves as a liaison between GSCO, unhoused individuals, and various civilian organizations offering resources
- Attend annual national conferences for professional development and alignment with best practices in outreach and support
