Montgomery County, Texas, just north of Houston, boasts a population of 620,000 residents.
According to its website, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) Crisis Intervention Team embraces the mission “to provide the most comprehensive and effective law enforcement response to help persons undergoing a mental health crisis.”
MCSO’s crisis team model partners a highly trained deputy with a mental health peace officer license with a Qualified Mental Health Professional (QMHP) working in tandem to de-escalate situations and provide individuals with optimal mental health interventions and services. Cohort 2022.
Program Goals
With the grant funding, MCSO and Tri-County Behavioral Healthcare plan to add two full-time master’s level QMHPs who will be embedded in the field with a sworn peace officer on patrol.
As stated on its website, the MCSO crisis intervention partnership includes:
- Specially trained officers to respond to crisis calls
- Ongoing training of community and staff aligned to deal with mental health
