Jacksonville is located on the Atlantic coast and is the most populous city in Florida with over 970,000 residents.
Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) launched its co-responder program in 2019. While all officers are CIT-trained, the co-responder program consists of 12 officers and 6 clinicians, with one of those clinicians being an added position due to the grant funding. Paired with three patrol officers, this expansion allows JSO to place co-responders in the three patrol zones that did not previously have them. Cohort 2021.
Program Goals
JSO reports experiencing the following positive impacts from full CIT implementation:
- Strong collaboration between clinicians and officers
- Increase in de-escalation and effective communication
- Increase in follow-ups
- Increase in connecting high utilizers with effective services and treatment
- Efficiency in connecting consumers with services or treatment because all officers are CIT trained
