Tallahassee, the capital of Florida, has a population of about 202,000 and is the county seat and only incorporated municipality in Leon County.
The Tallahassee Housing and Community Resilience Department, Human Services Division aims to decrease the number of times law enforcement patrol officers respond to mental health calls through the Tallahassee Emergency Assessment Mobile (TEAM) Unit. The TEAM Unit consists of a CIT officer, an EMT, and a mental health practitioner. When the TEAM Unit is not available, a CIT officer responds. The TEAM Unit assists in the following ways:
- Available to respond to crime-related calls, accidents, and emergencies
- Can assist residents in the community with their specialty skills
- Dispatched in unmarked vehicles, which has been warmly welcomed
- Provide an increase in community awareness of resources, staff, and programs
Cohort 2021.
Program Goals
The grant funding allows Tallahassee to expand its TEAM Unit by adding approximately 19 contracted hours for the mental health practitioner and overtime for the officer and EMT.
