Maricopa, in the south-central part of Arizona, is the fourth-most populus county in the United States with a population of 4,420,568.

The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) and its primary partner, EMPACT Suicide Prevention Center (EMPACT-SPC), seeks to increase public safety and enhance the quality of life of persons with behavioral health needs by expanding and enhancing current collaborative efforts between their criminal justice, mental health, and substance abuse treatment systems. A master’s level clinician and certified peer support staff are dedicated to supporting MCSO deputies who respond to calls-for-service. Cohort 2023.

Program Goals

With funding from the grant, the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office, and the EMPACT Suicide Prevention Center plan to:

  • Increase public safety and enhance the quality of life of persons with behavioral health needs
  • Expand and enhance current collaborative efforts between criminal justice, mental health, and substance abuse treatment systems
  • Enhance training for MCSO deputies
  • Provide first-responding deputies increased access to behavioral health crisis expertise and resources
  • Provide specially designed follow-up and navigation assistance to connect individuals with ongoing evidence-based practice treatments and services
