El Paso County, TX

El Paso County is in westernmost Texas, centered between New Mexico, Chihuahua, and Texas, with a population of about 866,000 making it the sixth-most populous county in the State.

The county is made up of El Paso, Socorro, San Elizario, Horizon City, Canutillo, Fabens, Clint, Tornillo, and Vinton.

El Paso County is surrounded by the Franklin Mountains in the north and the Hueco mountains in the east making El Paso a premiere location for outdoor sports such as hiking and biking.

The Sheriff’s Office partnered with Emergence Health Network to pair a deputy with a clinician to respond together to calls involving mental illness, with an emphasis on de-escalating tense situations. Cohort 2021.

Program Goals

  • Establish three Crisis Intervention Teams to help keep El Pasoans dealing with mental health emergencies away from jail.
  • Improve law enforcement officers’ ability to safely intervene, link individuals to mental health services and divert them from the criminal justice system when appropriate.
