Lancaster, PA

Lancaster, Pennsylvania is one of the oldest inland cities in the United States and has a population of about 58,000.

Lancaster Police Department (LPD) launched a Police Social Worker Program (PSWP) in 2021 which operates differently than a co-responder program. Referrals to the social worker come from the police officers and the social worker is never on call.

LPD plans to implement a Lancaster Crisis Intervention Team to develop a collaborative, consistent process to be followed by all partnering agencies, and in coordination with community mental and behavioral health partners. The primary objective of this collaborative approach is to better connect people to the help they need to prevent future encounters with police for better outcomes for all parties involved. Cohort 2021.

Program Goals

The grant funding allows LPD to bolster its response approach to better serve the community and consumer population who are suffering from various mental health conditions.
