Lawrence, a city located in Essex County, Massachusetts on the Merrimack River, has a population of about 89,000 residents.
The Lawrence Police Department (LPD) seeks to implement a co-responder model in addition to CIT officer training, which has been in place since around 2018. LPD plans to hire mental health clinicians to be embedded with the law enforcement team to complete the co-responder model. Cohort 2021.
Program Goals
The grant funding allows LPD to accomplish the following:
- Employ mental health professionals to respond with officers to incidents involving individuals experiencing mental health crises
- Provide CIT officer training
- Help those with mental health conditions or substance use disorders access medical treatment
