Leveraging Data Analysis to Expand Crisis Response Services in Alachua County, Florida

How important is data collection in crisis intervention?  The short answer is… very.  Sure, data collection is crucial for a variety of reasons (documenting program activities, demonstrating efficacy, maximizing resources…) but have you thought about using data collection to ensure continued funding and sustainability? One of the CIT ASSIST Cohort members did just that.

The Alachua County (Florida) Sheriff’s Office has two Co-Responder Teams, each team consisting of a sheriff’s deputy and a licensed clinician. They gather detailed data while enroute to and on scene at calls, documenting key information and outcomes. This data serves as a vital tool for ongoing evaluation, providing monthly, quarterly, and annual reports to key stakeholders. Further, these reports demonstrate the success of the program and highlight the need for additional teams. However, the data also underscores the financial savings achieved through effective diversions (law enforcement response, jails, emergency room, and Baker Act), providing a clear picture of the program’s monetary impact.

In 2024, the Alachua County Co-Response Teams identified more than $2.8 million in direct cost savings associated with program activities and diversions. The activities, successes, and cost savings of the prior year were presented to the County Board of Commissioners. The Board of Commissioners was so impressed with the $2.8 million in savings generated by the program, the addition of a third Co-Response Team for the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office was approved.

Data collection is essential for the success of Co-Response and Crisis Intervention Teams, particularly for those funded by grants. When grant funding concludes, a jurisdiction must then take on the responsibility of supporting the program. Having solid data is crucial to securing program sustainability, as the data demonstrates not only tremendous value to the community members receiving the services, but also the resulting cost benefits to the jurisdiction. Alachua County has shown that effective data collection and analysis are key to demonstrating the impact of the program, supporting its growth, and ensuring its continued success.
