American Fork is a city in north-central Utah County, Utah, with a population of about 33,000.
A community survey in 2021 showed a 90% ranking of good/excellent quality of life according to residents. The top reason was proximity to family, schools and work, and a feeling of safety and security in the community. American Fork Police Department (AFPD) seeks to sustain those feelings of safety and security by improving its law enforcement response and its management of cases involving individuals with mental health conditions. Program Goals
The grant funding allows AFPD to employ a full-time mental health professional who serves two functions:
- Play an active role in responding immediately in a co-responder model with law enforcement professionals to calls received by the partnering jurisdictions regarding individuals with mental health conditions
- Perform a case management role by proactively supporting and extending resources to individuals known to exhibit mental health conditions
