Johnson County, situated in the heart of the state of Indiana, has a population of 161,765.
Volunteers from multiple departments within Johnson County Government, with support from their supervisors, created a Crisis Intervention Team that was officially funded in 2022 by the American Rescue Plan Act. While all three original members have law enforcement backgrounds and undergo extensive training on crisis intervention, a crucial element was missing: a professional social worker to conduct client assessments and ensure follow-ups. Through grant funding, Johnson County fully funded a clinical social worker position and plans to deliver training to local public safety agencies, raising awareness of CIT services and teaching crisis intervention strategies. “We are leading by example. We have a full-time therapist right now that is calling and checking in on our folks that we deal with. I think they have just taken it to the next level. I simply can’t praise them enough.” (Daily Journal, March 14, 2024)
